DISABILITY HATE SPEECH SYMPOSIUM

There was a symposium on the topic of disability hate speech, focusing on the book I am co-editing with Terje  Olsen, John Eriksen and Janikke Solstad Vedeler. 


 Terje Olsen gave an introduction to the book and then four of the authors spoke. 


I spoke first, about my chapter with Louise Walker on disability hate speech laws and then on my sole-authored chapter on online disablist hate speech. 


Next, Erin Pritchard spoke about the hate speech associated with the term "midget."


Line Melbøe then spoke about her chapter co-authored with Hege  Gjertsen, regarding the experiences of hats speech targetting Sami people with disabilities. 


Terje Olsen then spoke about his chapter, co-authored with John Eriksen and Janikke Solstad Vedeler, providing a detailed survey of Norweigan people with disabilities subjected to hate speech.

2019 Hawaii

I gave a talk on what disabled people say about their lives, and what that tells us about disability politics and disability studies,  at the Pacific Rim Conference in Hawaii.

2019 Boston

I gave two sole-authored papers at the Eastern Sociological Society conference in Boston, and co-wrote six others with my students. 

2018 ASA Conference

On August 11, 2018, I gave a talk on "The invisibility of disability in sex trafficking activism (and the need to rethink sexual access") at the ASA conference in Philadelphia. 

2018 Hate Crime Conference

I spoke at the conference International Network for Hate Studies at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology in  Oshawa, Ontario, Canada on May 30, 2018.  My talk was on "The Unique Characteristics of Disability Hate Crimes " 

2018 Malta Conference

I spoke at the  Euro-Conference on Disability Studies and Disability Activism in Malta on May 3.  My talk was entitled "Critiquing 'sex rights': Disabled men using disabled women who are victims of sex trafficking."  

2018 Toruń Keynote

I gave a Keynote lecture at the  First International Seminar on Educational Ethnography and Disability Studies  at  Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, Poland on 10 April 2018. My talk was entitled "Working with brain injury survivors from the inside out." 

2018 Grand Valley State University lecture

I spoke on "A Social Model of Impairment" at the Department of Sociology at Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Michigan on February 26.

2018 Online Pedagogy Conference

 I spoke on "Strategies for improving student learning in an online environment" at the Online Conference "Virtuality and education - future perspectives" hosted by Nicolaus Copernicus University,  Poland on May 30, 2018.

Stubblefield Rape Case

"Inside Higher Education" ran a story on the conviction of the Disability Studies/Ethics Professor who was convicted of sexually assaulting a disabled man.  I was quoted in the story.
